Chapter Eleven

I kept an eye on the group while I listened to Ben. They wandered about in circles almost aimlessly, their heads bent.

To my surprise, upon my arrival I found Deputy Lindstrom and the two young women speaking of the storm the previous evening and the amount of snowfall. I thought the assignation at the rest stop a very strange location for such a discussion. I also thought it strange that Tracy’s demeanor was not as grief stricken as we had been led to believe.

I hoped you were watching when Kathy Mullens arrived. She approached the vehicle, and I realized that the occupants were not surprised by her arrival, had in fact been waiting for her.

“Go on.” I really wanted Ben to get to the point.

Her first words were, “Did you find it?”

Tracy responded first. “We were waiting for you.”

Kathy said, “Can’t you all do anything without me?”

Tabitha spoke for the first time. “I didn’t throw—” I do not know what she was about to say, as Deputy Lindstrom interrupted.

“We don’t have time for this. Rosie and the team will be back here in no time at all to comb the area.”

“Then let’s get to it,” Kathy said.

They all climbed out of the vehicle, and as you see, they appear to be searching for something.

“How do you know it was a tire iron?”

Ah! I forgot that comment. It was just as I heard you calling to me. Someone, one of the women, made mention of a tire iron. It might have been Kathy. I am not certain. I was returning to you.

“Then go back there! I’m sorry I interrupted you.”

Yes, at once.

But I may have sent Ben back too late. The group had returned to the vehicles, each to their own. I didn’t see a tire iron in anyone’s hand, but the sheriff’s SUV blocked the majority of Lindstrom’s body save his head as he climbed inside.

“Ben! Ben!”

Yes?

“Oh, you’re back! Did you ever leave?”

I was on my way but saw them entering their vehicles. Then you called out to me.

“Well, I’m just a pain in the neck, aren’t I? Did you see a tire iron? Who has it?”

I was not able to get there in time.

“It’s not like you have to walk, Ben. Don’t you fly or something?” I was frustrated with myself for calling him back early both times such that he might have missed important clues.

We have had this discussion before, Minerva. I do not fly. I am not a witch with a broom.

I shook my head, watching everyone drive out. Fortunately, they drove out away from me, and I didn’t have to duck out of sight.

“Witches don’t fly on brooms, Ben. That’s just silly.”

So are flying ghosts, dear. Or any ghosts, for that matter. I am the first of my kind that I have known, and even my existence is silly.

“No, it’s not, Ben. You are supposed to be here. And I’m so glad that you’re with me.”

As am I, Minerva. As am I.

My cheeks warmed, and I cleared my throat.
